Six Ways to Treat Yourself on Singles Awareness Day
Rumour has it that it was an enterprising young student at Mississippi State University who first started Singles Awareness Day, seeking to create a day for single people to enjoy as Valentine’s Day looms large.
And boy we’re glad they did.
Even though Single Awareness (or ‘Appreciation’) Day is often shortened to ‘SAD’, there’s nothing to be down about when February 14 rolls around. Not everyone feels fulfilled in a relationship, and being single can be something to be savoured and celebrated. Think of the time and money saved that would otherwise be spent on a partner!
Whether you view it as Anti-Valentine’s Day, or the day you toast your freedom, when Single Awareness Day lands this year, be sure to show yourself a good time. Here are six ways to do just that:
1. Pop a Cork
Open a bottle of bubbly or grab yourself a corkscrew and pour a glass of red; if ever there was a time to kick back and enjoy a drink, it’s Singles Awareness Day. We don’t want you to think of it as drowning your sorrows – you’re single and you’re awesome. Instead, raise a glass to the fact that you don’t need to spend your hard-earned dosh on heart-shaped junk!
2. Splurge Out
How does a new smartphone or tablet sound? Or that dress you’ve been eyeing in the window of your favourite store? Or those shoes you just couldn’t quite justify buying? Well, in the immortal words of Tom and Donna from Parks and Recreation – Treat. Yo. Self.
It’s your money, it’s your day. Time to splurge a little and feel good.
3. Did Someone Say ‘Spa Day’?
Speaking of splurging, you don’t have to spend money on clothes or gadgets. You could instead treat yourself to a relaxing spa day, complete with massages and facials. Switch off from social media and escape the constant reminders that it’s Valentine’s Day. In your world, today’s Singles Awareness Day, and you’re fully aware of the joys of peace and quiet.
While some like to celebrate Singles Awareness Day on February 14 as a great big middle finger to commercialised luvvy-duvviness, others opt to celebrate on February 15. And the best bit about waiting a day? All that fancy Valentine’s Day chocolate will be on sale. Yum!
5. Take a Break
Travelling when single is one of the best things you’ll ever do, and taking a solo long-weekend away could be just what you need this Singles Awareness Day. You can go wherever you want, and do whatever you want to do, all without compromise. What’s not to like?
6. Hit the Dancefloor
Being single should be enjoyed, and rounding up your single friends for a night on the tiles is one way to guarantee a good time. Singles Awareness Day is the ideal excuse for pulling on your dancing shoes and showing the world that you don’t need a partner to have fun.
Bonus Idea: Sign Up for a Dating Site
Even if you’re currently happy being single, it doesn’t mean you don’t want to mingle. While you’re chilling out with your wine and chocolate on Singles Awareness Day, it might be a good idea to check out a few dating sites and apps and line up a post-Valentine’s date.
Did you know dating sites typically receive a boost in signups between Christmas and Valentine’s Day? That means you’ll have plenty of new profiles to peruse. Apps like Tinder and Bumble are fun and easy to use, while reputable sites such as Match, OKCupid, and of course Urban Social offer a safe and reliable way to meet someone new.
Whatever you do on Singles Awareness Day – and the best bit is, it can be whatever you want – we hope you have fun!
